A New Career After 8 Years in the Army

After serving 8 years in the armed forces based in Tidworth as a UMEC (working on Land Rovers and various military vehicles), Jamie decided it was time for a change.

In August 2025, he joined the Ripon Group through the Military Hiring Programme, seeking a different opportunity.

What made you make the change?

"Coming from a background as a car mechanic within the military, the decision to join the programme was driven by a desire to explore something different and expand my skill set!" says Jamie.

Choosing Ripon Group was influenced by the appeal of trying something completely different despite knowing very little about the agricultural sector.

What skills have you transferred from the Armed Forces?

The main skill Jamie transferred over from the army was the commitment to completing a task efficiently and correctly to the best of his ability, confidence within the workplace and overall having a strong work ethic.

How was the transition from the Army into Civilian Life?

"Having a supportive environment and a strong team played a huge part in settling in so quickly!"

Jamie described the move as smooth, with similarities in structure and teamwork making it easier to adapt then Jamie first thought.

Training and Development

Despite having very little agricultural knowledge, training provided throughout the programme has been given wherever needed. Jamie initially focused on tractors, however, he is now moving onto opportunities of working on larger machinery such as sprayers.

"The training is provided and there is no such thing as a stupid question, that’s how you learn!" Jamie said.

"What's your favourite part about the job?"

Jamie explained that no two days are the same which was something that stands out as a major positive for him. The role involves working with a variety of customers and machinery keeping the work fun, fast paced and engaging. Working with John Deere machinery has been a notable shift from previous experiences, particularly due to the advanced technology and investment in high-quality machinery, Jamie said this was something that he really enjoys about working for the company and John Deere.

The working environment is fantastic, Jamie explained. The support since joining has been described as excellent with all the necessary resources and guidance available whenever he needed it.

Reflections and Advice to others…

Before joining The Ripon Group, Jamie had no expectations or prior knowledge of the agricultural sector. One of the biggest surprises has been the depth of knowledge within the industry and how much there is to learn, however not to let that put people off that are thinking of joining the industry.

Jamie's Top Tip for others…

"Be confident in your existing skills, they're more transferable than you think! Don't be intimidated by new machinery or systems and taking advantage of all the training provided and offered to you."

Jamie concludes by saying "If you're thinking of joining the programme, go for it! The opportunity to learn, grow and build a new career is there."
